Heidelberg Engineering has started a long-term cooperation with the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in Retina, under the leadership of Hrvoje Bogunović, from the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometrics of the Medical University of Vienna.

The Laboratory is devoted to the development of AI-based systems to improve efficiency in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of retinal diseases. Heidelberg Engineering supports the initiative as industry partner working with an interdisciplinary team of data scientists and clinicians for the next 7 years.

We are grateful and delighted to be the founding industry partner of the Christian Doppler Lab for Artificial Intelligence in Retina. We believe this new cooperation will lead to the development of artificial intelligence solutions to support ophthalmologists in their decision making. Most importantly, it will help advance our understanding of the most devastating retinal diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy,” said Arianna Schoess Vargas, Managing Director Heidelberg Engineering.

We expect this cooperation will deepen our expertise in this area and enable us to build next generation AI-driven imaging tools that can serve as effective clinical decision support systems for the diagnosis and management of the main retinal diseases”, said Tilman Otto, Head of Technology Management Ophthalmic Devices, Heidelberg Engineering.

Over the last five years, the medical world has worked hard to understand the capabilities of AI systems. Over the next five years, we will be looking at how AI can best provide practical support to clinicians in their day-to-day work,” said Hrvoje Bogunović, Director of the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in Retina.

Bogunović and his team are information scientists integrated within the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometrics of the Medical University of Vienna for seamless interdisciplinary collaboration with their retinal specialists. In its role as industry partner, Heidelberg Engineering contributes to the project with OCT, multimodal imaging and healthcare IT expertise.
