When examining retinal vein occlusions, the MultiColor Module is a valuable addition to the gold standard, Fluorescein Angiography (FA). It supports the detection of additional tractional components, such as in case of secondary epiretinal gliosis, for visualization of so-called ghost vessels due to retinal ischemia, as well as visualization of collateral circulation and neovascularizations, which are not always clearly recognizable. OCT Angiography can also help confirm a suspicion of ischemia. FA remains unbeatable as the gold standard for visualization of perfusion, especially in combination with widefield imaging. However, in case of heavy intraretinal hemorrhage, it is meaningful only after resorption. Older occlusions that have just recently drained are clinically not always distinguishable and sometimes it is challenging to classify reduced visual acuity. SD-OCT imaging can identify possible atrophic thinning of retinal layers in areas of occlusion. Therefore, the use of the various imaging modalities is especially helpful in the case of retinal vein occlusions, as they deliver different and complementary pieces of information to complete the diagnostic puzzle.
