The Importance of OCT for Every Patient

OCT images have become a necessity in managing retina and cataract patients because of their ability to identify pathologies that aren’t necessarily visible in a fundus image.

Dr. Steve Charles, a retina specialist from Memphis, TN, recommends acquiring an OCT on every patient and including this as part of the routine clinical workup. In his opinion, it is critical to get an OCT image before every cataract surgery to identify pre-existing conditions. If something is discovered after surgery, then it is considered a complication that will likely be attributed to the procedure.
