Inaugural Latin America and Spain Imaging Symposium 2021 (LASIS 2021) proves popular

LASIS 2021Heidelberg Engineering is grateful for the warm welcome of its first-ever Latin America and Spain Imaging Symposium (LASIS) among Spanish-speaking ophthalmologists from 23 different countries.

On June 25-26, 2021, LASIS provided a highly informative virtual forum that catered to ophthalmic practitioners –  live, free of charge and in Spanish.  Over the two-day period, LASIS and its focus on retina, glaucoma and the anterior segment attracted more than 400 participants from 23 countries.

The program centered on diagnostic imaging and was presented by an impressive expert panel, co-chaired by Dr. Roberto Gallego-Pinazo (Spain) and Dr. Lihteh Wu (Costa Rica).

Day 1 was devoted to retinal pathology and diagnostics. Attendees were presented with a wide range of clinical cases, covering topics such as retinal venous malformation, central serous chorioretinopathy and multimodal creativity in atypical presentations. After each case presentation, participants engaged with the presenters in a question-and-answer segment, often in lively discussion.

Day 2 featured a series of clinical cases on the anterior segment of the eye and the detection of glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness globally. Again, each case presentation was followed by Q&A and included a discussion of whether the ANTERION device could replace more established devices.

In total, LASIS comprised eight (8) presentations related to retina health on day 1, and five (5) presentations each on glaucoma and the anterior segment on day two, for a total of 18 presentations.  Attendees were able to test their expanded knowledge with a quiz at the end of each module. The highest scoring participant of each specialty won a free registration for the XXXV Congreso Panamericano de Oftalmología.

LASIS attracted active participation from physicians in private practice, hospital eye doctors, researchers, and other eye care practitioners.

The vast majority of the queried attendees gave high marks to the content of the inaugural LASIS: more than 98% of respondents said they would participate in another such online offering.

Heidelberg Engineering was pleased with the warm reception. “Events like these facilitate the professional exchange within the ophthalmic community,” said Ian Wotherspoon Ziegler, Area Sales Director LAME. “We always appreciate feedback on how our solutions improve patient care and are especially pleased with the enthusiasm for ANTERION among the attending clinicians.”

Based on the positive feedback on LASIS 2021, Heidelberg Engineering plans to host future editions of this educational format in the coming years.
