Journal Article Review – MultiColor imaging in the evaluation of geographic atrophy due to AMD

JARAge-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of legal blindness among elderly individuals in developed countries. Traditional color fundus photography (CFP) has been the gold standard in the evaluation of geographic atrophy (GA).

A study compared several imaging modalities as alternatives to CFP to evaluate the extent of GA. The MultiColor Module for SPECTRALIS® was one of the imaging modalities analyzed. MultiColor uses three laser wavelengths simultaneously to provide diagnostic images that show distinct structures at different depths within the retina.

This study provides quantitative evidence for the high reliability with which GA can be discriminated on confocal MultiColor images. MultiColor provided contrast of GA borders similar to fundus autofluorescence.
